OK THIS IS ONLY A SUGGESTION

Message:
BUT... TIMEOUTS HAVE BEEN A PROBLEM FOR US SINCE THE BEGINING OF THIS TEAMS HISTORY. I HAVE BEEN THINKING OF HOW WE CAN HELP STOP TIMEOUTS OR AT LEAST REDUCE THE DAMAGE OF TIMEOUTS. THIS IS WHAT I PROPOSE. ALL TEAM MEMBERS WITH LESS THAN 50 GAMES COMPLETED ARE ALLOWED 6 TEAM GAMES. OVER 50 COMPLETED GAMES ARE ALLOWED 10 TEAM GAMES. ANY TEAM MEMBER OVER 100 GAMES COMPLETED CAN HAVE UP TO 20 GAMES IF THEY SO CHOOSE. (ALTHOUGH I DONT THINK ANYONE WANTS THAT MANY) NOW LET ME ADD THAT THIS IS NOT A TRUST ISSUE ITS FOR ALL OF OUR OWN GOOD. GENERALLY THE PEOPLE WHO TIMEOUT HAVE NOT BEEN WITH THE TEAM LONG. ALSO I WOULD LIKE TO MENTION OUR NEWEST MEMBERS ARE DOING A FABULOUS JOB AND THIS IS NOT DIRECTED AT THEM, FOR THAT MATTER ITS NOT DIRECTED AT ANYONE. I ONLY WANT US TO HAVE SOME SORT OF PROTECTION AGAINST TIMEOUTS. THIS IS NOT A RULE WRITTEN IN STONE AND I WOULD GREATLY APPRECIATE YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS. IN MY HONEST OPINION WE ALL WORK TO HARD TO HAVE OUR LEGS CUT OFF BY TIMEOUTS. SOME ON THIS TEAM HAVE BEEN SHOOTING FOR ZERO FOR OVER A YEAR! SEEMS EVERYTIME WE MAKE A RUN FOR IT WE GET KNOCKED DOWN. IM ONLY THINKING OF THE TEAM AS A WHOLE. YOUR THOUGHTS ON THIS ARE APPRECIATED :) AND DONT FORGET GO BOUNTY HUNTERS!!!! ;)

support

Message:
I, for one, totally support this idea. The timeouts situation is crazy and we have suffered sop badly from it. I'd go further that if a member times out their game privileges are reduced to 4 concurrent games until they've made up the damage. Any more time-outs and they're goneburger. Now, of course, sometimes there are extraordinary circumstances but with true team spirit we should get access to the internet somewhere to at least put a vacation flag on. Now my miserable score is from poor play and hangovers - inconsistent that may be but timeouts are crap.

Children 1, Astronaut 0 — In the end, the astronaut could not outwit the children. Wednesday, Greg Chamitoff, an American astronaut, resigned a long-running correspondence chess game against a group of children from Stevenson Elementary School in Bellevue, Wash. They had started the game in September 2008 while Chamitoff was stationed aboard the International Space Station. The game had been the idea of the National Aeronautics and Space Administration. Officials at the agency had asked the United States Chess Federation about having Chamitoff play a game of chess against some of the federation’s members. Stevenson was chosen as an opponent because the school ...

London Chess Classic: Kramnik's lesson in positional play — McShane-Kramnik, London 2009. Black to play. With two rounds to go in the London Chess Classic, the Norwegian chess prodigy Magnus Carlsen looks set to win the tournament. Vladimir Kramnik, his main rival, is in second place. In this game from round three, Kramnik displayed his refined positional understanding. RB I've been following this tournament online, but I missed this particular game, and more's the pity because I can't find a good continuation for Black. Clearly Kramnik has the better game – the two centralised knights look very threatening – but how to convert Black's positional superiority into a winning position? 1...Nxd2 2 Nxd2 doesn't lead anywhere and ...

Message:
agree with the posts above. While I accept and agree with richardwyles point that there are occasionally exceptional circumstances for timeouts. Personally, I find it leads to a don't care sort of attitude (and, like our beloved captain[!], I'm not pointing any fingers) and that isn't what GBH is about.

My current team score is (and has been for most of the time I've been in GBH, I believe) is in the minus figures but that's due to bad playing on my part and, occasionally, being totally outclassed, but I don't believe I've timed out in any of them, despite some occasionally horrendous positions. If you don't like the look of your position and your potential in the game, resign and play someone else or ask stinky for some easier match-ups in forthcoming matches: he'll always do his best to oblige.

On a different note, hi, hello and welcome to our new members! I hope you enjoy your time in GBH.

Gelfand Wins World Chess Cup — Boris Gelfand of Israel is the 2009 World Cup champion. Gelfand won the title by beating Ruslan Ponomariov of Ukraine in a playoff on Monday. The first four games of the playoff were rapid games (25 minutes per player per game) and Gelfand took the lead by winning the second game. But Ponomariov, with his back to the wall, won the last rapid game to tie the match up again. The playoff then went to blitz chess (5 minutes per player per game) and Gelfand once again took the lead by beating Ponomariov in the first game when he managed to trap Ponomariov’s queen in 21 moves. Ponomariov rallied again, winning the second game. But Gelfand won the third and Ponomariov ...

No cure for timeouts, I'm afraid

Message:
But we should be able to limit out losses by limiting the number of games played by each member (that goes for all of us). Maybe we should have a trial peroid for our newbies of 20 team games and only 4-6 games simultaneously. After that we could have a rule that for every 4 team games someone finish without losing on timeout, he/she can play 2 more team games (up to 20). If someone times out, he or she is only allowed 4-6 games (like the newbies), and has to climb the number of allowed team games ladder once more.

I'm only thinking aloud here. My suggestion is a modified version of Stinky's suggestion. I've lost count of how many team points we've lost on timeouts, but I'm quite shure we're past 100 a long time ago. Fortunately we gain some points on timeouts as well, so there's allmost a balance in this. If we can limit our losses on timeouts that would be great help in reaching 0 points and beyond. With the help of timeouts of other teams we could reach 0 points rather quickly, I think.

One thing that might help getting some of the lost team points back: When a player timeout a lot of games, that players rating drops a substantial amount. What if we exploited that drop in rating? Since a player timing out many games will become underrrated, we could match him/her up with players having the same rating. In that way our underrated team member could get the opportunity to get back some of the lost points. This will not get us all the points back, but maybe a few points extra. According to ELO ratings, a 100 point difference in playing skill (which may differ from actual ratings!!), will give the stronger player a 64% chance of winning each game they play. If the difference in skill is 200 points, ELO theory gives the stronger player a 76% chance of winning each game. A 50 point difference gives a 57% chance. So, if one of our members drops 50 points due to timeouts, and after that is matched up against players having approximately the same as his/her new rating, that would give our player a small advantage.

A tragic knight — The London Chess Classic, a fabulously organized eight-player elite tournament, shaped up as a confrontation between two great chess grandmasters, the top-rated Magnus Carlsen of Norway and the former world chess champion Vladimir Kramnik of Russia. By the luck of draw, they met in the first round, and Carlsen won. The Norwegian GM was still in a clear lead on Sunday with four points in five rounds, a full point ahead of Kramnik. U.S. chess champion Hikaru Nakamura drew four games and lost one. The tournament concludes Tuesday. The Carlsen-Kramnik duel looked like a perfectly played game by the Norwegian, who took advantage of Kramnik's stranded knight. "If one piece is ...

A Game Lasts 163 Moves, and That's Not Even a Record — Chess professionals are conditioned to games that take four to five hours and last about 50 moves, but occasionally play lasts much longer and the contest becomes a war of attrition. That is what happened between Nigel Short and Luke McShane of England in the first round of the London Chess Classic, which started on Tuesday. McShane, who had White, got a tiny advantage out of the opening, but Short defended well, and after 60 moves it seemed as if the game would end in a draw. But McShane, 25, persisted and Short, 44, was forced to continue to defend. It took McShane seven hours, and 163 moves, but he finally broke Short and forced him to resign. That ...

Hello Stinky and friends!!

Message:
You guys have a good captain and I like dealing with
him. His ideas about timeouts above are right on. My
team just took a nose dive from timeouts and we are trying
to turn this around now by adding some new people and getting
rid or replacing some of the others.

Another topic!! I have made it a policy to match opponents
within +/- 100 points but that was using the GK rating
system. The Elo system is a much better system and it is
a much better predictor of strength. Still using 100 points,
in my opinion, is too much so I have now gone to +/- 75 points
in matching opponents but I will still strive to match
as close as possible. Yesterday a team captain urged me to
pair with specific people but they were in some cases 150 in
my favor. He wanted this so I agreed but this is not too
good for the other team. I will not do that for my people
unless a specific person wants to play another specific
person but for the sake of team competitivness I will
do that only very rarely.

I posted this in your thread because I deal with you guys
quite a bit in team matches. I did not and will not post this
in the Forums because the Forums, in my opinion is a waste
of my time. :-]

So take care and let's have many more good matches
in the future.

My 2 cents

Message:
Timeouts happen in every team, it's inevidable....or at least something near this...
This severly affects the team score and oubviously it should be avoided. If we are able to severly lower our time outs, we should be able to climb up the rating ladder. First, about trond's post ; I agree 100% with this method. Although timeouts are quite hurtful, we must make what we can of the little advantages. When the player timeouts, the capt. should give him plenty of games against lower rated players...taking the advantage. This brings us to the trust issue. If a trust bond cannot be created between the capt. and the player, how can the captain trust us by giving us huge amounts of games if he thinks we will just timeout? I hope that Stinky will trust me as much as I trust him. I trust that Stinky will try to reduce his timeouts (if he has any) as much as I will... Now, finally, what are some ways we can work improve our resistance against the abominable T.O.

Here is what I propose;
Playing a lower amount of team games;
this improves the quality of your games and takes off the possibility of a huge number of T.Os
(Remember...playing 100 team games, winning 50 and losing 50 comes back to the same thing....but playing only 2 or 4 and winning them all = CELEBRATION

If a timeout;
notify Stinky with regrets!
receive big number of games against lower rated players

General improvement;
If you are constantly winning games, prepare to be hit by a solid wall. When you hit this, take a break and review tactics, analyse your games and basically refresh yourself...

If you are planning a vacation or a big weekend...anything that restricts your computer use...reduce your number of games and remember to post a vacation

This is my two cents...

p.s. Not resigning on my team game was beneficial...my opponent made a mistake and now Im back in battle....

Go GBH

I have to say that I could agree with the stinky one more. I have been here for a long time, and along with Stinky, Ricky, Sxy, and many others have been hurt again and again by timeouts. Perhaps people who timeout en masse should be repremanded, and allowed less games... but if they do return comitted to the team then they should perhaps be allowed to come back in full swing.

i will explain what i have done in the past

Message:
on timeouts. if you look at our past team members many of those are timeouters. not all but many. in the past if someone timed out i would send a message asking if everything was ok. if they didnt respond, which i took to mean they didnt really care, then i removed them from the team. if a person wrote me first explaining the situation then i had alot better time dealing with a timeout. some never came back so of course they were removed. some never responded so they were removed. some gave bogus reasons (for instance said computer problems) but some failed to realize i checked their last online status and knew they were lying. needless to say, they are also gone. i never want to remove anyone from the team but it will always be the team before the individual. i have timed out one game in my history with gbh and it was out of complete stupidity so i know it can happen. what brought this whole thing up is our last group of timeouts by verybadplayer. i have sent him a message to see if everything is ok. above all else the well being of a team mate is first and foremost on my list. if he is ok and has a good explanation i have no problem in giveing hiim a second chance. i wont say any names but i have given some more than a second chance but it was after much discussion and understanding. i dont want to harp on this issue too long because i dont want any of us to dwell on it. but... i wanted to make sure that in general we all agree this is best and good for the team. i dont consider myself the boss of this team by any means. i consider myself a team mate that sets up the matches. i dont want to rule with an iron fist but i do want to move up the ladder. i dont even care about first place i dont even look at the teams table anymore, but i do look at our score as a measure of our improvement. i want us to get better. this team is too damn good to be below zero. i will glady hear anymore suggestions before i decide excatly how i want to implement our new rules. the ideas so far are all good. thanks :)

On timeouts

Message:
I know we came from almost every corner of the world. And the availability of internet connection may vary accordingly.
In my case I have ADLS both at home and at work, plus I can count on more than 1 PC, and this limits greatly the possibility to timeout for harware failures.
I make frequent business trips of 2/3 days and sometimes I add 1 day to the weekend. Of course, there's the chance to go to an internet cafe when I'm abroad but I don't count blindly on it, and I try not to use the postponement feature for short periods, even because you have 1 postponement per month and I tend to save them, especially at the beginning of the month.
So if I'm going on a 2/3 days trip, I usually check the games that are running out of time (tipically team & tournament) moments before leaving, and make my move, this way I know that they won't timeout before I come back home.
Sometimes this means that my move isn't particularly brilliant, but a blunder can be recovered, while a timeout can't.

Regards,
Roberto

I would like to share. It is from my Aesop ;)
---------------
"THREE BULLOCKS AND A LION
A lion had been watching three Bullocks feeding in an open field. He had tried to attack them several times, but they had kept together, and helped each other drive him off. The lion had little hope of eating them, for he was no match for three strong Bullocks with their sharp horns and hoofs. But he could not keep away from that field, for it is hard to resist watching a good meal, even when there is little chance of getting it. Then one day the Bullocks had a quarrel, and when the hungry Lion came to look at them and lick his chops as he was accustomed to do, he found them in separate corners of the field, as far away from one another as they could get. It was now an easy matter for the Lion to attack them one at a time, and this he proceeded to do with the greatest satisfaction and relish. IN UNITY IS STRENGTH"

I just told him I couldn't flame him since a GBH would never do so....court ajourned! Other quotes in his games are like u suck....resign because you know you will lose and other basic blabber. If he wants to play faster games, he should visit a blitz site. I would also advise Stinky to report his behaviour to the other team captain. Maybe he's without a team in the near future. Abusers are have fortunately been rare on GK so far, but as we get more members we are bound to get some bad apples.

Hello, to every Global Bounty Hunter in the world. I'm Manuel Saiote from Évora in Portugal. My nick is Valdevino 'cause of a group of friends I have since my University times, called "Os Valdevinos". I'm 34, I was born in Lisbon In the 19th of January of 1969. I work during the day in a call-center of the portuguese telecom and at night I'm a barman and DJ.
I'm not married but I live with the love of my life, Sofia. I have a wonderful little she-dog called Luna.
I'm crazy about soccer and my team is Sporting Clube de Portugal, I love music (a great, great, great fan of everything about Pink Floyd) and I love board games.
Thanks for the invitation to be part of this team... I thank you my captain, oh my captain...
