The Singapore Prize and The Earthshot Prize
The Singapore Prize is a biennial award for exceptional published works by authors in any of the official languages of the country – Chinese, English, Malay and Tamil. It was established by the Singapore Book Council in 1999 as a way of recognizing outstanding literary achievement and encouraging the growth of the local reading culture. It is also a platform for writers to share their work and reach a wider audience.
The winner of the prize is awarded a cash prize of S$25,000 and a trophy. Runners-up receive S$10,000 and a certificate of honour. The prize is awarded by an independent panel of judges. The prize committee comprises scholars and experts from a variety of disciplines.
Submissions can take the form of non-fiction and fiction works from around the world, as long as they have clear historical themes about Singapore. Submissions must be published between Jun 1, 2021 and May 31, 2024. The winners of the prize will be selected by a jury panel consisting of five members.
In addition to the traditional book category, the prize will now include a new Arts and Multimedia Category, open to any artist, playwright, performer or producer who has produced a multimedia and artistic historical work. The work must be delivered in the English language or translated into the language and must address any field, theme or period of Singapore’s history, with the aim of providing new insights and igniting excitement about the city’s rich past.
As a leading global hub for innovation and entrepreneurship, Singapore is the perfect home for The Earthshot Prize. The Earthshot Prize (TEP) celebrates the world’s most innovative solutions to climate change and is led by Britain’s Prince William through his Royal Foundation charity. The prizes are awarded by a panel of expert judges, and this year’s event was hosted in partnership with Temasek Trust and GenZero.
During the Awards Ceremony on November 7 at Mediacorp Campus, Accion Andina, GRST, WildAid Marine Program, S4S Technologies and Boomitra were announced as the 2023 winners of the prize. The Prize Winners will use the catalytic prize funding to scale their environmental solutions.
