With its temperate climate, stunning coastline, abundance of parks and gardens, wide selection of restaurants and cafes and cultural diversity, Sydney has so much to offer. But it’s not all about the big things in this beautiful city; there are plenty of hidden gems that can be discovered by those willing to take a closer look. One such attraction is the array of sidney pools dotted around the city and its suburbs.
The best part about sidney pools is that they’re free to use, and a great way to cool off on a hot day or after a long swim. These tidal pools can be found all over Sydney, and many of them were once used by the indigenous people for bathing and fishing. They are also a haven for ocean creatures, so don’t be surprised if you see the odd sea urchin or dolphin on your visit.
Wylie’s Baths, located in Coogee, is one of the most stunning natural rock pools in the city. It was established by Henry Alexander Wylie, a champion long distance swimmer, in 1907. The baths have raised decking built into the cliffs and sweeping views out over the ocean and Coogee Beach. The pool is a great spot for swimming and sunbathing, with plenty of shade and benches available. There are also toilets and facilities nearby.
Another tidal pool that shouldn’t be missed is McIver’s Ladies Baths, which was built in 1886 and still offers women and children a safe place to swim. The secluded rock pool is also home to little dartfish, whiting and toadfish that swim up and down alongside the women taking their unhurried laps.
If you’re looking for an indoor pool in Sydney, Waves Fitness & Aquatic Centre is a good choice. It’s a multi-sport facility that features a 50-metre outdoor pool heated to 32 degrees, a 25-metre indoor program pool and an onsite creche. It’s a great choice for families, and it’s also open from 6am on weekdays!
Another great option is Cook Phillip Park Pool, which is a public swimming pool in the heart of the CBD. This pool is well-maintained and offers heated water for year-round swimming. It also has a lounge area and is a short walk to Forrester’s, a popular pub and restaurant.
