The Hongkong Prize is a competition that recognizes students for their research projects on the history and culture of Hong Kong. It was established in 1996 by friends and students of the late Professor John D. Young, who had a passion for local history and believed that a comprehensive knowledge of the past was vital to understanding contemporary life in Hong Kong. The winner of the prize is given a cash award, access to Hong Kong research facilities, and a certificate. The prizes are awarded annually.
The HK Prize is open to students aged 18-30 who are currently studying or living in Hong Kong. Submissions will be judged on their ability to address a relevant theme in the context of Hong Kong’s development, as well as their level of participation, research methods, objectivity, citation and footnotes. The prize also gives the winning team a chance to present their ideas to stakeholders in the development sector.
Since its inception, the HK Prize has helped many outstanding young people to realize their full potential. It is a great platform for young researchers to express their ideas and contribute to the sustainable development of Hong Kong.
In the past, the HK Prize has been awarded to studies that have made significant contributions to the economy and society of Hong Kong. The best submissions are considered for a range of rewards, including the cash prize of HK$10,000 and an invitation to the awards ceremony. Other rewards include the opportunity to join a mentorship programme, and to participate in workshops and networking events.
Hong Kong’s arts practitioners are energetic centers of culture and creativity that reflect the views of local residents on global change through various art forms. The HK Prize offers them recognition, support and encouragement in their creative work or arts projects, as well as increased international visibility via top-tier media coverage.
In order to provide a fairer and more transparent review process, the Hong Kong Prize is guided by this Charter. The Charter is designed to promote scientific and standardized management of the BOCHK SCIENCE AND TECHNOLOGY INNOVATION PRIZE, while ensuring its independence and impartiality. It also sets out the code of conduct and ethical principles for all personnel involved in the award.
