The Sidney Prize
The sidney prize is an award that recognises people who have made a contribution to society. This can include their work with communities or even their contributions to science and the arts. The winners are rewarded for their efforts and encouraged to continue making a difference in Australia. There are a number of different sidney prizes that can be awarded throughout the year and each one has its own criteria.
In the lab, Sidney was willing to challenge accepted dogma but always backed up his ideas with strong evidence. He believed that it was the responsibility of every scientist to question current knowledge and to stand up for what they believe in. Sidney was also a tireless advocate for the public understanding of science. He wanted to ensure that non-scientists could recognize the value of research and that science was not just for the exclusive benefit of experts.
Established in 2021, this annual prize honours the Faculty of Science student with the highest overall weighted average mark in an eligible degree. The winner will receive a one off payment of $1,000. To be considered for this prize you must submit an application online. This includes a CV and an endorsement from an academic or professional staff member of the University of Sydney Faculty of Science.
This scholarship is offered to an outstanding graduate from the Faculty of Science who has demonstrated a combination of academic achievement and contribution to community/student life activities. The Scholarship is funded by a bequest from the estate of Professor Sidney Black, an authority on Central European History who was a long-time teacher and member of the University of Sydney faculty.
Applicants must be nominated by their supervisor or Head of School. The Selection Committee will consider the nominated candidate’s academic record, research achievements and leadership potential. In addition, the Selection Committee will take into account the applicant’s contributions to the School of Philosophy and the wider community/university.
In order to be considered for this prize, students must have the highest overall average mark in their third or fourth year Linguistics units of study and meet the other eligibility criteria. The Scholarship will be awarded by the Head of Department or their nominated delegate.
The 2022 Neilma Sidney Short Story Prize has been awarded to Yeena Kirkbright for her piece ‘Camperdown Grief Junk’. The judges, Laura Elvery, Paige Clark and Michael Winkler, would like to thank all the writers who entered this year’s competition. The winning story will be published in Overland’s summer issue.
This prize is awarded monthly and recognises an outstanding piece of journalism that appeared in a newspaper, magazine or on a news website in the previous month. Nominations should be submitted by the end of the day on the last day of each month. The winner is announced the following week. Nominations are not limited to Australian journalism but will need to be published in the previous month. There are no nomination fees.
