The HK Prize 2023
The HK Prize was launched in 1986 to reward outstanding secondary school students who achieve good academic results, excel in community service and leadership activities, and demonstrate good character. The HK Prize offers cash and book coupons to help students further their studies. The HK Prize has been awarded to more than 70,000 students since its launch.
The prize is offered by the Hong Kong Jockey Club, which operates the city’s horse race betting and football wagering operations. It is also the authorized operator of the Mark Six lottery. Its judging panel includes a number of prominent figures in the fields of journalism, law and business. The prize winner is chosen through a blind vote by the judges. The judges’ decision is final.
A total of seven winners will receive a HK$2.8 million jackpot for the Quartet & First 4 Merged Pool, while the top prize in the Triple Trio Pool is HK$15 million. Another HK$2.8 million will be added to the Quartet & First 3 Merged Pool. In addition, a HK$2.2 million jackpot will be attached to the Class 1 races. The full list of prizes is available here.
In addition to the prestigious individual awards, Hong Kong has two major public institutions that award prizes for journalism. The Hong Kong Journalists’ Association (HKJA) holds the annual HK Media Awards for Excellence, which honours journalists and media professionals in the region. Moreover, the Asia Press Institute’s Asian Media Awards recognize journalists for their work and achievements.
During its 2023 edition, the Society for Hong Kong Studies (SHKS) will award the IBP 2023 Best Article on Global Hong Kong Studies to recognise the most outstanding research on Hong Kong from a global perspective. SHKS encourages submissions in all Social Sciences and Humanities disciplines, provided they take Hong Kong as the main subject of inquiry, and are written in English.
This year’s prize will be presented at the International Convention of Asia Scholars (ICAS), an immersive platform bringing scholars and practitioners from around the world together to discuss issues relating to Asia. ICAS has brought over 20,000 scholars, civil society representatives and publishers to its 11 conventions.
The HK Prize is an opportunity for young Academy Fellows to showcase their work and to be recognised by their peers. It is open to all principal authors of peer-reviewed journal articles with a Hong Kong focus that have been published in 2021, 2022 or 2023. SHKS welcomes submissions that place Hong Kong in comparative and theoretical perspectives.
